The Ecology & Behaviour
● Ants are social insects living in colonies led by an ant queen
● There is only one ant queen in one ant nest, the queen continues to breed
(lay eggs) from spring to early summer
● After mating, male and female winged-ants jointly fly to a new place to build
their colony
● Ants takes 1-2 months to develop from eggs to larvae, then passes through a
pupal stage before emerging as an adult
The Impact
● Ants intrude households to collect sugar or sweets and they may sometimes bite
people
● Recent reports indicated that the most damage comes from the foreign species
Monomorium pharaonis; they can build a nest in areas without soil. Hence, really tight gaps or the backs of wallpapers in households are good enough to build a nest and proceed with large-scale breeding. It is very difficult to eliminate these types of ants
